Old South African coins can be extremely rare and valuable. This article takes a look at some of the most sought after and collectable types of old South African coins.

ZAR coins, are a type of coin that was minted for the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek from 1894 until 1902. Because they had very limited mintages, they are extremely rare, and can reach up to hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction.

Some of the rarest ZAR coins include:

1874 Course Beard Burgers Pond
1874 Fine Beard Burgers Pond
1892 Proof Zar Set
Sammy Marks Tickey 1898
Double 99 Overstamp 1899 Pond
1902 Veldpond

The Veldpond is actually one of the highest performing rare coins in the worlds. In 1902 there were only 986 coins minted. They were given the value or £1, and a year later they were worth £11. Since then the Veldpond has increased and increased in value, with returns reaching over 50% plus in a single year.

The single 9 coin is one of the most important coins ever produced in South Africa. It was made it 1899, and it was the only coin of its type ever to be minted, making it the only unique coin in South Africa. It features the current president of the time, Paul Kruger, with the number 9 stamped just below his bust. The coin has a current estimated value of R 15 million, which is the equivalent of over $1.7 million!

If you own old South African coins, then you can do some more research to find out their estimated value. There are several websites which provide details and images for all of the old coins. You could also take your coin into a specialist antique dealer, who will be able to help identify it, and tell you its value.

If you are wanting to sell your coin, you could list it on eBay, as many collectors use this site to buy old coins. You can also approach your local auction house, and see if they will sell it at auction. Remember auction houses will take a percentage of the sale price to cover their costs. Alternatively, you could approach your local coin dealer, and ask if they would be willing to buy it off of you.
