Jeans For Men

For well over 100 years now men have enjoyed wearing jeans. Over time, they have evolved from being something that was mainly worn as work wear, to something that was worn as an act of rebellion. From there they became an item of clothing, which was worn mainly as casual wear to what they are today, which is everyday wear.

The Evolution of Jeans

Over that time, the look and feel of jeans has changed drastically. The very earliest jeans were made out of extremely heavy dark blue denim. They were also distinguished by the fact that the pocket seams were protected by brass rivets. Because they were designed primarily for work, there was plenty of room for movement and they were quite loose fitting. Many manufacturers made bib and braces versions. They were not a particularly attractive piece of apparel, and not particularly comfortable to wear. The material was tough and scratchy. However, they were extremely hard wearing and protection for those who carried out manual labour.

By the 1950s and 1960s, teenagers started to wear them as a symbol of rebellion. James Dean, for example, wore them in the famous film Rebel Without a Cause. His attire caused outrage and the wearing of jeans was banned in many places. Of course, this automatically meant that a pair of blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a biker jacket was essential wear for every teenager. It was at this point in history that jeans began to acquire status as a fashion item. This was also the point at which the styling of Jeans changed. They became tighter fitting and more tailored. However, the pocket configurations and rivets stayed right up until the 1970s.

From the 1960s onwards, the cut and styling of Jeans evolved along with the fashions. When Teddy boys were wearing drainpipes, you could buy drainpipe jeans. When hippies were wearing flares, you could also buy flared denim jeans.

Today, jeans come in all styles and in an assortment of colours. Even the material they are made out of this changed considerably. The fabrics used to make jeans for men are much lighter than they once were, so they are far more comfortable to wear.
