The Citroen Traction Avant or ‘Front Wheel Drive’ in French was superbly designed and manufactured between 1934 and 1957. During these years, the Citroen Traction Avant was renowned for its ease of drive, smooth feel and distinct appearance; the Citroen Traction Avant was well known for being an ‘elite’ drive with functionality and aesthetic appeal in equal measure. The Citroen Traction Avant was the first of its kind; the very first steel monocoque front wheel drive that paved the way for a number of other front wheel drive manufactured vehicles in the years to come. Not just a pioneer, the Citroen Traction Avant was- and still is – a highly desirable drive.
There are many variants of the Citroen Traction Avant. From a Cabriolet, Coupe and Commerciale to the Familiale, the Citroen Traction Avant was for literally, anyone! And boy, did it become popular! More recently however, as opposed to an everyday ‘pleasure buggy,’ the Citroen Traction Avant is utilised mainly as a form of wedding transportation and they are just as regularly shipped to exotic locations to be raced in world- recognised rally championships. Indeed, in 2002 a group of over 30 Citroen Traction Avants drove from Los Angeles to New York without single incident!
Nevertheless, despite the fact that Citroen Traction Avants are fairly robust; withstanding of the off joy ride or two; they all need a bit of TLC from time to time and occasionally, when the owner of a Citroen Traction Avant has ‘loved’ their passion wagon a little too much(!) they need an entire overhaul; a complete restoration.
