The earliest contribution to East Yorkshire transport was made by the Romans, who built the first major roads in the area. They built their first roads across The Wolds in 70AD. From their Wold road the Romans built a major road to their fort at Eboracum. Today both roads are still in use. The Danes who took over the area did not do much to the road network they increased agricultural production, but used the existing road network to move those extra goods.
Not a lot of development was necessary until the 18th and 19th century when heavy industry came to the county and agricultural production increased further. However, most of the products produced in the county were moved by the new canal and rail networks that were built rather than by road.
