How Afghan Rugs are made

Afghan rugs and oriental rugs are both very popular styles of rugs and both are distinctive as being from these places. Afghan rugs come in many different sizes, colours and designs and feature a range of various patterns, shapes, animals and people. Afghan rugs and oriental rugs have been around for many centuries and they are still used today in most Afghan and Oriental homes as people in these countries don’t tend to have full carpets due to the hot climate. Afghan rugs would be used in traditional Afghan homes to add some comfort to stone or tiled floors and people would often use these to sit and kneel on whilst they pray. Most of the Afghan and Oriental rugs that are made today are still made using traditional techniques that involve hand weaving fabrics to create the rugs.

When Afghan rugs and Oriental rugs are made they will often be made using natural dyes to create rich colours. In today’s modern world Afghan rugs and oriental rugs can sell for high prices and many people will be keen to own one of these unique and original rugs to add some character and interest to their home. Due to the fact that Afghan rugs and Oriental rugs are very colourful they will match most décor and they work surprisingly well in very minimalist homes to add a splash of colour and interest to an otherwise plain room. Rugs tend to be used in the UK on all kinds of floor coverings. They can be used to add warmth to rooms with tiled, stone or wooden floor or they can be placed on top of plain carpets to break up a space and make it more interesting.

Afghan rugs and Oriental rugs are made using one of three techniques. They will either be kilim or flat woven where the wool is threaded in and out of warp strings so they don’t have pile, they can be knotted and the type of knot used in Afghan rugs and Oriental rugs is the Persian Senneh knot or the rugs can be tufted where the wool is injected with a tufting gun into the backing and sealed in place with latex and covered with a backing cloth. The price of Afghan rugs and Oriental rugs can vary greatly depending on the size, design, quality and age of the rug.
