Air conditioning is a term that refers to the process of dehumidifying, heating or cooling the air in a room. An appliance referred to as an air conditioner, or AC is used to facilitate this process.
The air conditioning units we know today are a modern invention. However the process they use stems from as far back as ancient Egypt! People hung reeds in the windows, which had small stream of water running down them. The water would evaporate from the reeds and in turn cool the air that was blowing through the windows. Another example of an ancient air conditioning system was from Rome whereby water was circulated around the inside of a building’s walls, which would help to cool the inside of the house down. It wasn’t until 1911 when the world’s first electromechanical air conditioning unit was made by inventor Willis Haviland Carrier.
The modern air conditioner works by using a compressor to pump a refrigerant (commonly know as a freon) through a piece of copper piping. The refrigerant heats up the air which is then passed through a barrel shaped object called a condenser. It is then passed through an expansion valve which speeds up the cooling process. By now the refrigerant is nice and cool. The last step is to blow air over the chilled copper coils which contain the refrigerant. This cools and de-humidifies the air. Of course all modern ACs can be set to different temperatures depending on your personal preferences and how hot or cold it is outside.
As well as being used in the home, air conditioners are also used in hospital surgery rooms, as they will purify the air to ensure it doesn’t not contain any harmful particles. The humidity is also adjusted to prevent patient dehydration.
There are several different types of Air conditioning units available on the market. Many ACs come with an internal an external part which is used to draw air in from the outside. Smaller portable units are also available for people or business who need to use air conditioning systems on a less frequent basis.
