Satin fabric is a form of glossy fabric that was first made in China from silk. In the 12th Century, satin fabric was first introduced to Italy and by the 14th century garments made of satin fabric had become very fashionable throughout Europe, and became the fabric of choice among royalty.
Traditional Satin Fabric
A traditional satin fabric has both a dull and a glossy side. This makes it very important for people who sew to be careful when assembling garments made from this fabric – the shine of the fabric needs to be on the outside and not the other way around. The recognisable satin shine is derived from the specific weave of satin fabric, through a process known as floating. In certain cases, this effect can be achieved on both sides of the satin fabric, producing what is known as double-faced satin. Double-faced satin is highly desirable due to its softness on the skin, but is much more expensive, especially if the satin fabric is made from silk.
The Different Types of Satin Fabric
Satin fabric was originally made exclusively from silk, but today it can be made with synthetic fabrics such as polyester, acetate, nylon and rayon. These synthetic fibres allow a more affordable way of achieving the glossy finish that satin fabric is known for. Satin fabric comes in different varieties that can vary in thickness, flexibility and weight. There are several common types of satin fabric such as the following:
* Duchess Satin
* Satin Faconne
* Slipper Satin
* Delustered Satin
Each of these types of satin fabric have specialised uses that you will see them used in. Duchess satin, for example, is a common choice for wedding dresses. Satin faconne is a looser more flexible satin fabric than duchess satin, and can have patters woven through it such as stripes or paisley. Whilst slipper satin, not surprisingly is often used in shoes and slippers.
