A Simple Guide to Preparing Your Car for its MOT

Although you may think that submitting your car for its MOT is an unnecessary expense, the truth is that your car simply is not roadworthy without it. Every car in the UK that is over three years old needs to undergo an MOT exam annually and the good news is that as long as it has been regularly serviced and is in good condition there should be no reason why it should not pass. In order to prepare your car for its MOT there are a few things that you can do.

Step 1 – Clean Your Car

Firstly you should make sure that your car is clean before you submit it to a garage for its MOT. You can either clean it yourself or take it to a carwash beforehand. Not only does a clean car look much more professional (and roadworthy) but you may find that some garages will refuse to inspect it if it is filthy.

Step 2 – Check Your Brakes and Pedals

The second thing you need to do is check your cars brakes and pedals. Test the foot brakes first and see if you notice anything unusual. If the brakes seem resistant you may want to have them serviced before you take your car in for its MOT. You will also want to check the handbrake to make sure that it works as it should – check to see if it feels loose or resistant. If there are problems, again you should make sure to get them serviced beforehand.

Step 3 – Check Everything Else

The other aspects of your car that you will want to check before taking it in for its MOT include:

* The exhaust – be sure to check for leaks
* The steering wheel – check for any unusual movements when you turn it
* The windscreen – check for any cracks in the window that could cause poor vision. Small cracks will usually be fine however if there is anything that could obstruct your vision you will need to have this seen to.
* Tyres – make sure your tyres are not worn or uneven. Look out for any damage to the tyres and check that the thread is larger than 1.6mm. If it is smaller or if there is damage you will need to replace them before the MOT.
