Cavity Wall Insulation for Builders

There are two main types of cavity wall insulation. The kind most people are familiar with is the type that is retro fitted into existing buildings. This type of insulation is usually sprayed into the cavity between the outer and inner skin of the building. It can also be fitted into internal stud and plaster walls.

However, nowadays the insulation you find in most modern buildings is the kind fitted whilst the building is being built. In many countries, building regulations mean that a building has to constructed with insulation included.

Types of Cavity Wall Insulation

There are several materials used for cavity wall insulation. The most popular type is composed of a wall of thermal blocks. For extra insulation, either one or both sides of this thermal block wall are covered with a multi-layer bubble film that is coated with aluminium.

For timber frame buildings, most builders use breather foil as a form of insulation. As well as providing insulation, the breather foil protects the components of the wall during the building process. In particular, it protects the timber from the elements. Again, it is a bubble wrap coated in foil; however, it is quite a thick sheet.

Another popular form of wall insulation used by builders comes as individual boards. They are blocks of expanded polystyrene, which are covered with a sheet of foil bubble insulation. The bubble insulation is slightly longer at the base than the polystyrene it is fitted. This allows the bubble insulation of the top blocks to fit over the top of the blocks below, covering the seam between each row of blocks. As a result, this makes the insulation more effective.

You can buy cavity wall insulation from your local builder’s merchant or from DIY stores. However, if you have a big building project shopping online is a good option.
