Dry Riser and Dry Riser testing

Dry risers are systems of vertical pipework which are used to get water to the upper floors of a building in the event of a fire. Should a fire break out in a building with a dry riser installed then fire fighters will use this as the easiest way to get large amounts of water up to the fire floor, pumping it up via a ground floor inlet box, often found in staircases or other accessible locations. This article will then conclude by informing you on where you can find more information on dry riser testing and dry riser maintenance.

Dry risers are commonly used fire protection systems in multi-storey buildings and are usually mandatory under building regulations for properties with floors in excess of 18 metres above ground level.

Differing from wet risers, which are kept full of water ready to be used for fire suppression, dry risers are maintained with empty pipes which must have water pumped into them by fire fighters on their arrival.
Dry Riser Testing and Maintenance

As with all fire protection systems, dry risers should be maintained on a regular basis to ensure they are still operating properly and can be relied upon when they are needed.

They have at their disposal a fully equipped test vehicle with on board pumping unit. Once an initial visual inspection has been undertaken and landing valves checked, the dry riser is pumped full of water before the further tests are carried out. Many of our testing personnel are full time, retained or ex fire fighters and we can rely on them for their professionalism and complete familiarity with dry riser systems.

Should any defects be found then a report would be issued along with a cost for the remedial works to be carried out. On completion of a test and the dry riser passing the requirements of BS9990, a certificate of compliance will be issued to you for each riser. If you would like more information then this can be found by entering the keywords ‘dry riser testing’ into an internet search engine.
