So, who was John Steed?

Anyone with an appreciation for map designs will surely know the name John Steed. A far cry from what would become his life’s passion John Steed begun his working career as a tailor. What we know of the man himself is that his career as a tailor saw him relocate to London to find work, and it was here, whilst mixing with academically-minded people, that John Steed found his true passion in life and began designed old maps of intricate detail.

Following the publication of his map in 1595, John Speed joined the College of Antiquarians and gained the patronage of Sir Fulke Greville. This allowed him to cease his involvement in manual labour, and concentrate his entire energy on creating designs of destinations around the globe.

Fast forward nine years and John Speed produced the first county old map of his native Cheshire in 1604. He completed his magnus opus in 1612, a complete worldwide old map of every country in the known world and the old map itself included some of the earliest visual accounts of many British towns.

Today, the designs of John Steed are highly sought-after by cartographers across the globe. Old Maps has a selection of some of the most notable old map designs of John Steed, as well as copies of the old map designs of another notable cartographer, John Ogilby.
