Improving retail security

All retailers should have security solutions in place, whether they operate a small market stall or a major superstore. The level of protection required will depend on the location, the likely client base, the merchandise, and a variety of other considerations, but theft can eat into the profit margin of any shop and any shop can take action to improve their security. Here are a few tips businesses can use:

-CCTV security systems are important. Not only will cameras deter thieves, they’ll also provide crucial evidence should a theft occur. Whether it’s a single teenage shoplifter or an organised midnight burglary, the more evidence there is, the higher the chance of a conviction or another positive outcome for the business.

-Human eyes are just as crucial. While CCTV security systems can be very usefull the value of shop floor staff shouldn’t be underestimated. The best way to help staff monitor and control a retail space is to make sure that they have clear lines of sight, and that there are no hidden corners where thieves can remove security tags or packaging without coming under scrutiny. Of course, there is another advantage here- as all retail designers know, open lines of sight also help draw customers further into a shop. They feel more welcome and more inclined to browse and therefore buy.

-It’s not just about protecting merchandise. Whenever cash moves from the registers, there is a risk of theft. Security solutions for end of day and cashing up procedures should be managed with the greatest of care. The safety of the staff involved in moving cash from place to place should also be considered carefully. A health and safety lawsuit can be just as harmful as a major theft, and no company wants its staff to be exposed to undue risk of harm.
