Man to receive car accident compensation
A man who suffered injuries when he was run over by a vehicle belonging to co-front man of The Libertines Pete Doherty has been offered compensation. In September 2009, Christopher Corder was delivering leaflets in Suffolk when he was hit by the singer’s Daimler.
At the time, the vehicle was being driven by the star’s agent Andrew Boyd, who was subsequently jailed for driving offences. Meanwhile, Doherty was banned from driving for allowing his car to be used by an uninsured motorist.
As a result of the impact, Mr Corder suffered major injuries to his brain and fractures to many of his bones. While he is now stable, he is unaware of anything around him. His family contacted personal injury solicitors in a bid to get compensation for their suffering.
In a new development, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) agreed to a High Court damages settlement that will see Mr Corder and his loved ones receive a lump sum and a five-figure payout each year to fund his care. The amount of money that has been awarded has not been disclosed, although it is thought that the full value of the package will run well into seven figures.
Speaking to the London court, Mr Corder’s barrister, Robert Weir QC, said: “The MIB can now effectively stand in the shoes of the claimant (Mr Corder) and sue the first and second defendant.”
Established in 1946, the MIB exists to provide compensation to those who make road accident claims and who were the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced motorists.
Meanwhile, Mr Justice Lloyd Jones, who approved the settlement, stated: “This has been a tragic case and the financial award is, of course, limited in what it can do.”
He added: “Sadly, you cannot undo what has happened. He has suffered great misfortune. He is, of course, fortunate in that he has a loving and devoted family. I hope that now the litigation has come to an end will enable you to look to the future in the knowledge that whatever happens he will be secure.”
