Motability Cars

Motability cars allow people who qualify for a mobility allowance to buy a car and use the cash from their allowance to do so. Using these funds, you can buy a car, electric scooter or powered wheelchair. The scheme works in such a way that you get to choose the car that is right for you rather than being given a car, which prior to the 1970s was the case.

How Motability Cars Differ From Standard Cars

Cars bought under the scheme include breakdown insurance, servicing, maintenance, road tax and insurance. The idea is to provide a good quality car that will not let you down. For a disabled person suffering a breakdown and not being able to quickly get help is not an option.

In the past getting insurance was a problem for some disabled people. Now, when you buy under the Motability scheme this is not a problem anymore.

In addition, if you need modifications to allow you to drive the car this is possible. Many of the dealers that sell these cars have good connections with specialist firms that can adapt cars. Some of the larger manufacturers recognise the fact that cars need to be adapted. This means that they already offer a wide range of adaptations carried out before the car is delivered.

Finding a Motability Cars Dealer

Not every car dealer is happy to sell cars under the Motability scheme, but those that do give you great choice. They make special deals with a wide variety of car manufacturers.

A good dealer has plenty of specialist knowledge. They can use this knowledge to help you to find the right car for you. A car that allows you to drive safely despite the mobility issues you have.

An internet search for ‘Motability cars’ brings back a good list of car dealers who offer cars under the scheme. If you add the name of your town to the search, you can find dealers close to where you live. Another good source of information is other disabled people, most disability websites have a section that explains the Motability scheme and often lists dealers as well.
