Natural Stone

Natural stone, what exactly is it? You might say all stone is natural stone and to a point you would be correct. Natural stone is a great tool when it comes to design and sculpture. While stone working has become something of a thing of the past when stronger and more durable compound materials have been created, natural stone is still something of a wonder. While I could not tell you the chemical code of it nor could I explain how it was formed, I could suggest it is nature’s own attempt at artwork. You may be surprised by this notion, but in many ways natural stone is all part of the great canvas we call the world. Rain is known to erode rock over several hundreds of years. In areas where pollution has made the rain acidic, rain is now known to erode rock far faster than it had been able to do previously, and some forms of natural stone are highly susceptible to it. Natural stone formations created by rain are in their own way the most beautiful things in the world, nature and interacted with nature and created a sculpture. You could call a mountain a work of art if you went by these definitions, and you’d be quite right. Why wouldn’t this formation of natural stone be considered a work of art? The land is the canvas, the natural stone is the paint, and the rain eroding the stone is the paintbrush.

Although ideally a better metaphor could be made comparing it to sculpture, it does help reinforce that natural stone is to say the least one of the greatest materials artists have to work with. Natural stone has created shelter, and it has created art. While even artists tend to favour different materials and methods these days, natural stone is still something to behold. Its beauty is something not easily described, its texture is smooth or rough, it can be hot or cold, but despite these variations natural stone holds an aesthetic that cannot be ignored; we recognise it as a building block of our world.
