Tourism in Turkey

Over the past 20 years, Turkey has grown into a huge tourist destination. In 2008, they welcomed 31 million visitors.

Turkey is a country that has been a crossroads for international trade for literally thousands of years. This means that the Turkish people have an extremely rich and varied culture. This is strongly reflected in their fantastic cuisine, which is genuinely like no other on earth.

Turkey is a Muslim country; however, they are extremely tolerant of other people’s cultures. For example, in most parts of the country alcohol is openly sold and consumed by tourists. They also offer modern clubs and entertainment, which suit Western tastes.

Istanbul the capital is welcoming more visitors. Cultural destinations such as Canakkale, izmir and Ephesus are also attracting more visitors.

Eastern Turkey, in particular the area around Erzurim, is welcoming more thrill seekers. It is an area that is famous for its white water rafting, and it is home to a beautiful untamed National Park.

Cappadocia is another popular destination. It has an unusual moon like landscape that is pocked with cave hotels, which are wonderful to stay in. If you do visit the area, you really must take a hot air balloon flight. The landscape below you is spectacular it is nothing like you have ever seen.
