What is Your Dog Eating?

Dogs are happy to eat all kinds of things. From grass to other animals’ excrement, the moment you look away, there is a good chance that there is something going in their mouths that shouldn’t be Luckily, canines have extremely good digestive systems which means that the likes of grass and faeces are unlikely to them any harm. However, there are certainly downsides to them eating things they shouldn’t and not only is there a chance that they could pick up parasites from such things, but also that everything from their breath to their diet may end up being affected.

It is always wise to stop your pet from eating things they shouldn’t be, if only so you can keep a much keener eye on their diet. Whilst they have good digestive systems, they still need to have very focussed nutrition to keep them as healthy and fit as possible and to ensure they can ward off disease.

However, even when you feed them real dog food, it is not always going to be clear exactly what it is they are eating. Shop bought food may be full of starchy fillers that have no nutritional benefit for dogs, and therefore it is going to be important to be aware of what they are eating at home as well as when they are out on a walk.

Buying good quality dog food is a very good start, but you will also need to ensure that they are not snacking on things between meals that they shouldn’t be. This can either lead to unnecessary weight gain or will lead your pup to simply not be hungry when they should be eating nutritionally balanced food.

So whilst snacking on grass or even scraps might not be bad for your pup in and of itself, if they are not eating the right amount of the right food, it could easily lead to health problems.
