Why Outdoor Classrooms are a Good Idea

Children today spend less time than ever outdoors. They are so busy playing with their computer games, surfing the internet and texting that they simply do not spend any quality time in the great outdoors anymore and this means that they are really missing out on the wonders of nature and the world around them. This is why it is such a good idea to install outdoor classrooms in schools.

Outdoor Classrooms

Outdoor classrooms will allow children to spend some quality time outdoors where they can experience the sights and sounds of nature and get their hands dirty planting seed or studying bugs. Ann outdoor classroom is basically an outdoor area such as a gazebo, shelter, canopy or lodge, where the children can spend time studying in a natural environment, whilst being sheltered from the elements.

Good For all Subjects

Many people wrongly assume that outdoor classrooms are only of use when teaching about the environment or natural science subjects but, this could not be further from the truth. Outdoor classrooms can be used to teach all manner of subjects. For example, children could take art classes in their outdoor classroom; this would allow them to draw landscapes and environments that they see. It can also be used in English classes as children can be asked to write about their environment and so on.

Space and Use

Outdoor classrooms require space, so it is always a good idea to make the most of them. It is great to get the children involved with their space and setting them projects which can be accomplished in the outdoor classroom space is a great way to get them to engage with their environment. This could be as simple as setting up a rota allowing the children to take turns at filling up a bird feeder for the visiting birds, but it will help them to be more aware of their space and environment than they were before.

You could even set up a vegetable patch, or grow some fruit trees. This would teach the children responsibility and educate them about food – something which is very important at present.
