“Ouch! I didn’t realise that was an electric fence!”

An electric fence: not something many of us know much about but if you involuntarily come into contact with one that’s charge- ready to pounce- you will become far better acquainted with an electric fence and exactly it can do!

An electric fence is a physical deterrent that farmers and landowners use to prevent unwanted feral guests in the form of foxes and deer but an electric fence can also be used to keep wild boar from raiding crop fields, keep wild animals off airport runways and even prevent geese from soiling public walkways! You can encounter either a lethal electric fence – used to prevent human trespass into government sector zones– or a non-lethal electric fence than does little other than shock an entity into never attempting unauthorised access again.

There are few disadvantages or flaws to an electric fence should it be installed effectively with an attention to detail approach but an electric fence is not always appropriate for some areas as it may cause interference to nearby telephone cables and interrupt radio and television reception for the local residents. However, as long as an area is inspected thoroughly prior to installation; an electric fence will rarely cause problems.

To be effective, electric fences are kept charged using electric fence energisers which are mechanically- driven to generate electrical pulses from one end of an electric fence to the other. Electric fence energisers are either run by lead acid or dry cell batteries, or freestanding batteries kept charged by solar panels and the power consumption of an electric fence- when in good condition- is low so they can last for several weeks on a single charged produced by solar controlled electric fence energisers; making them the most economically- sound, cost- effective option.
